WFT Member Mo O'Connell's Bruise, a short film hig WFT Member Mo O'Connell's Bruise, a short film highlighting the issue of domestic abuse & sexual assault, will world premiere at Galway Film Fleadh on the 6th of July at 10AM.

The story is told through drama, movement & dance. With music composed especially for the film by the award-winning composer Natasa Paulberg. It is the story of Heather (Emily Kilkenny Roddy) who finds herself in a candlelight vigil with women who have experienced similar situations to her.

Developed in response to multiple events, BRUISE is a visually driven film that explores the many facets of domestic & sexual abuse against women. Following the journey of Heather, a woman trapped in an abusive relationship, who manages to escape her domestic prison, only to find herself vulnerable to the many threats that wait just beyond her front door, BRUISE is a story about finding your voice & reclaiming your body & a film that attempts to find hope in the midst of brutality.

On the Western Front Studios is a production company based in Westport run by producer / Cinematographer team Emer & Brian Durcan. Emer Durcan (Producer) had just completed her MA at NUIG & wanted to sink her teeth into a project that was importan. She worked closely with Safe Ireland, The Mayo Women's Support Services & Adapt Kerry to incorporate survivors' stories into the characterisation of Heather & John. She also worked closely with the Rape Crisis Center who in turn came & acted in the film. Bruise is Directed by WFT Member Mo O’Connell. Her previous endeavors include the Makers & Shakers Award-nominated HUM, Girls, Proclaim, Haven, Eve and feature film Spa Weekend.

“Mo is a force to be reckoned with. While she was directing the female extras, she changed the whole atmosphere of the shoot & indeed the film by saying ‘tonight we scream for all those who can't’. Referring to all the women who are still living in abusive situations. At that moment we all knew we were here to do something special, something important” - Emer Durcan
The Chair and Board of Women in Film and TV Irelan The Chair and Board of Women in Film and TV Ireland are devastated to learn that there is now no constitutional right to abortion in the United States. The immediate and detrimental consequences for millions of women who make the decision to end a pregnancy is heartbreaking and an affront to decency. In Ireland, are all too aware of the pain and suffering caused by restrictive and prohibitive laws around abortion having only recently voted to overturn a constitutional ban that caused misery and havoc for decades. We must remember that women’s rights everywhere are precious – and precarious. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our comrades in the US.
You’ll always remember the films you love by tho You’ll always remember the films you love by those iconic images on the screen. It’s the Director of Photography who captures these visuals, curating the aesthetic vision of a project. In our latest podcast, we celebrate the art form. WFT Vice-Chair, DOP Jaro Waldeck is in conversation with celebrated DOP Kate McCullough about the role, expertise and artistic input of a cinematographer on a project, as well as her impressive career to date.
