Meath Film Festival announces exciting programme for third annual event

September 14-15, 2024

The third annual Meath Film Festival takes place at the stunning Solstice Arts Centre in Navan, from September 14-15. Founded in 2022 by the Meath Film Collective, the festival is a vibrant celebration of cinema, creativity, and culture in the heart of Ireland’s Ancient East that shines a spotlight on Meath’s artistic talent and serves as a hub for both local and international filmmakers. Tickets available at solsticeartscentre.ie

This year’s programme features an exciting lineup of national and international films, including both feature-length and short films that showcase diverse voices and innovative narratives from around the globe.

Among them a special screening of Kneecap, the riotously entertaining story of the eponymous Belfast Irish-speaking and rapping trio. Expertly balancing social and political commentary with a classic sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll hip hop narrative, Kneecap is a stylish and dynamic comedy docudrama. These are rebels with a cause, and the Irish language has never felt so vital. There is much anticipation for this screening which will take place September 15 at 7pm with tickets available from the Solstice Arts Centre website.

Music and ancient indigenous language also take centre stage in our second feature, All You Need Is Death, but Paul Duane’s folk horror is an altogether different beast. This unnerving, moody tale about the search for a sinister ballad is steeped in Irish pagan folklore and the result is a compelling watch and arresting listen, thanks to the wonderful score, composed by Ian Lynch of gothic folk band Lankum. All You Need Is Death will be screened September 14 at 7pm and Director Paul Duane will be present for a Q+A afterwards. Tickets available on the Solstice Arts Centre website (see below).

In addition to our film screenings, we are proud to offer a Children’s Acting Masterclass for Camera with Grace Collender, a distinguished actor, writer, and dancer known for her roles in The Country GirlsThe Big Chapel, and Find Your Way Home. Young talent will also feature in the annual favourite, 60 Second Short Film Competition, which gives the next generation of filmmakers the opportunity to have their work shown on the big screen. The Acting Masterclass will take place September 14 from 10am. Spaces are limited so book your place now at solsticeartscentre.ie  to avoid disappointment.

New to this year’s festival is a Networking Event where filmmakers and enthusiasts can connect, discuss, and collaborate in a relaxed setting. Whether you’re a seasoned filmmaker or a curious beginner engage in lively discussions with industry professionals, and connect with fellow enthusiasts who share your passion for cinema. This exciting addition to the Meath Film Festival programme will take place September 15 at 12:30pm.

The Festival is proudly organized by the Meath Film Collective, a passionate group of local filmmakers who bring a rich diversity of backgrounds and experiences in film. Founded in 2022 by Siún O’Connor, the collective has successfully led the Meath Film Festival for three consecutive years, showcasing their commitment to the local arts scene. This collaborative effort is made possible through the generous support of the Meath Arts Office, Solstice Arts Centre, and their valued sponsors. With 20 years experience in TV and film Festival Organiser Siún O Connor is also an educator with over 5 years’ experience working with children through film with the BLAST and TAP schemes in schools.

Speaking on this year’s event Siún says The Meath Film Festival was borne out of a need for a focal point for film in my home county. Meath has a huge amount to offer in terms of location and talent and with the support of Solstice Arts Centre and Meath Arts Office I’ve been able to set up a Collective and run a successful festival for three years. I work closely with children in filmmaking workshops thanks to Navan Education Centre. It is a joy to encourage them that there are exciting careers in film should they be so inclined. One of the highlights of the festival for me is giving young people the opportunity to see their work on the big screen and to experience an audience reacting in real time. We have very exciting plans for the future of film in Meath.”
