Celebrate Women’s History Month with WFT member co-founded Festival, Directed By Her

Co-founded by WFT member, filmmaker and DIFF shorts programmer Aisha Bolaji, The GALPAL Collective returns with its first event of the year! Directed By Her is a four day event which will kick off on the 9th of March. Spread across various Dublin venues, Directed By Her has now expanded to an annual film festival after debuting in 2023 to a sold out screening in the Irish Film Institute. Directed by Her 2024 is back with support from Screen Ireland as primary funder through the Audience Development Fund.

To commence the festival, The GALPAL collective spring out ‘The Truth behind the Treatment’ on Saturday March 9th, a workshop for filmmakers looking for a guide on navigating the ever-daunting treatment process with insights from Filipino-Irish writer and director Nell Hensey. Joining Nell Hensey is finance expert Carmel Seery from the Local Enterprise Office to serve as a mentor for those who want to have a better understanding of managing freelance and business finances in the creative sector.

Directed By Her – The Slumber Party will be hosted on the second day of the festival on Sunday March 10th at the Racket Space. This night will consist of screenings of music videos and art films directed by women and members of the FLINTA community, with an eccentric and experimental DJ set to accompany.

On Monday, March 11th, The GALPAL Collective and The IFI will host their annual short form programme for International Women’s Month. The programme will solely include Irish works directed by women and those within the FLINTA community. The short forms will be followed with a panel hosted by Ashley Chadamayo, ending with a closing reception.

On the fourth day, The GALPAL Collective will host the closing event with Directed By Her – The Bigger Picture on the Tuesday 19th of March with a screening of American Honey directed by Andrea Arnold. The Bigger Picture focuses on celebrating iconic work by women in film and highlighting their contribution to the industry. After the festival, The GALPAL Collective will continue to spotlight women and members of the FLINTA community with The International Women’s Month Spotlight Series.

All short-form pieces for Directed by Her are curated and programmed by The GALPAL Collective co-founder, filmmaker and DIFF shorts programmer Aisha Bolaji (whosaisha) and founder of The Archive Series, Olamide Alao (archivedbyo).
